ApHasiA: Describe the city you live in

Experimental Short | 2023

11 min | Experimental Short

Writer/Director: Shan Jiang

An individual in her late 20s of the Chinese diaspora finds herself purposeless in a cold, monumental urban landscape. Upon an uncanny encounter with a white box, she is pulled into a surreal speech therapy room, where a stern therapist of her age and ethnicity diagnoses her with aphasia, speech impotence. Being asked to perform absurd tasks, the protagonist regains agency and re-examines her relationship with the city. As a result, the speech therapist fails at the assimilation task as the protagonist reconnects with her interiority.
